Riders out in force for the Tour de Retford

This event started several years ago with six young men led by Dominic Battersby of Bridgegate Cycles who decided they were going to have a fun ride visiting a few local hostelries and playing some amusing games here and there.

The event grew over the years with more and more riders until it came of age this year with an official British Cycling tag and some serious organisation.

Riders had travelled from as far as London, Manchester and York to take part and everyone was lucky enough to enjoy some excellent weather on the day.

The ride has gained much support over the years including this year from, the Broomwagon Velo Cafe, MyGym, Morrisons, Asda, Latham and Lewis.

Retford Lions Club were also involved and provided all the backup around the checkpoints.

They are also the recipients of all the profit after incidental expenses.

Philip Moult, the Lions president, commented: “It was a great event to help manage and the camaraderie between all involved was magnificent.”

The official title of the event is Amstel Standing, stemming from the first beginnings and it is intentionally on the same day as the famous Amstel Gold event in Holland.

At the end the feedback from riders was really positive and most are already looking forward to next year.

Retford Lions Club were over the moon when almost £3,000 was handed over as the proceeds of the event.
