Bawtry Phoenix Theatre Company are presenting the comedy Spring and Port Wine from this weekend.

Set in the 1950s the play concerns the Crompton family and the attempts of the father, Rafe, to continue to assert his authority as his children, Florence, Hilda, Harold and Wilfred, approach adulthood.

His wife Daisy continues to be the mainstay of communication while helping their wastrel neighbour Betsy Jane and welcoming Florence’s suitor Arthur.

Originally produced as a radio play in 1957, Spring and Port Wine found its way to the stage in Bolton, before running at the Mermaid Theatre in London for more than 1,200 performances from 1965.

It was made into a film in 1969 starring James Mason, Susan George, Rodney Bewes and Hannah Gordon.

A finely written play, it continues to entertain and illustrates the beckoning future and fears of young people growing into adulthood, their questioning and rebellion and their place in the lives of their long suffering parents

The play is on at Bawtry Phoenix Theatre from December 5-12.

Tickets are available on 01302 710825, online at or Bawtry Motor Company in the town.
