In my eyes there is nothing quite better than a good curry on a Saturday night.
Now as the cold winter nights set in a tikka masala, bhuna, or whatever your choice of curry is, it’s one of the tastiest ways to warm up.
As much as I love a curry, I’m always worried about trying a new Indian restaurant and prefer to stick to my usual haunts where I know exactly what I will be getting.
Despite my reservations I ventured out with my family to Zafran in Maltby.
We booked a table just to be on the safe side, but need not have worried because when we arrived there was only another couple dining – not the best sign.
We were quickly greeted by the waiter who showed us to our table before handing us our menus and taking our drinks order. Minutes later our complimentary poppadoms arrived complete with dips – a delicious and perfect start to any Indian.
There was a host of mouthwatering sounding dishes on the menu, with the promise that if there was a dish that wasn’t on the menu then the chef would gladly make it for you.
My boyfriend and I opted to share the lamb tikka kebab (£3.60), while my parents shared a karahi kebab (£3.60) and my brother had the onion bhaji (£2).
Everyone agreed that the starters were extremely tasty and perfectly flavoured. My brother got three good sized onion bhajis while those of us who had opted to share starters were given an accompanying plate of salad each. The tikka kebab had just the right amount of spice on, with a little kick, while the lamb was melt in your mouth.
I ordered the chicken tandoori masala (£7.50) main course and was greeted with a huge portion of tasty tandoori chicken with pilau rice and salad, and an accompanying curry sauce.
The other members of my party were equally satisfied with their main courses. The chicken muglai (£5), chicken korma (£5.20) and chicken bhuna (£5) came with some huge bits of chicken in which my mum and boyfriend both liked but my brother found some of his a little dry.
The naan bread was enough for the four of us to share and was fluffy on the inside but crispy on the edges.
My dad didn’t say much about his chicken birayni, but finished it in record time – which says it all!
After a round of coffee’s the bill arrived and we were all surprised that the total was only £56.60 – a bargain when you consider we were a party of five.
As we left I glanced around and noticed that the restaurant was a lot busier and obviously popular with the locals.
It may have taken me a while to find this Indian restaurant, but it is now definitely high on the list of the ones I will be returning to.
