Gainsborough Primary Schools battle it out at Cross Country Championships

Primary Schools in Gainsborough and the surrounding districts were celebrating after a fantastic afternoon of running was held at Lea Park at the Gainsborough Primary Schools Sports Association Cross Country Championships.

The annual cross country event saw 14 schools bring a maximum of eight boys and eight girls to race against children from other schools across the fields and through the woods in record numbers.

The boys were first off and a fantastic 102 of them completed their two laps enjoying the feeling of racing against others over a unique course.

Not to be outdone the 89 girls sprinted off into the distance and made short work of the 1450m course.

Winners of the Small Schools were Ingham, Medium Schools were Charles Baines and Large Schools were Saxilby.

The top three schools were Saxilby in first followed by Parish and Charles Baines.

Chairman of the Association John Anderson, said: “To have record number of runners is a testament to the enthusiasm and commitment of the adults in each of the schools to give their children different sporting experiences.

“Lea Schools are to be commended on producing a super event each and every year. Parish are delighted to have finished a fabulous second overall and well done to all the other schools who took part.

“It is hoped that many of these children who ran today will look to join the junior section of the town athletics club Morton Striders.”
