Coach load of Striders invade Ferriby 10 mile

Thirty Gainsborough and Morton Striders braved the cold temperatures and produced a string of personal best times at the Ferriby 10 mile road race last wekend.

The coach load of local athletes, an impressive entry for any local athletics organisation, tackled a very undulating course in challenging conditions.

Jordan Skelly finished eigth overall to lead the Striders home, setting a personal best int he process.

His time of 57 minutes 11 seconds put him third on the Striders all-time record list, just a second behind Andy Steel who ran 57:10 at Askern back in 1988.

The Gainsborough and Morton Striders 10 mile club record was set by Phil Kitchen at the age of 20, when he ran 54:30 in 1985 – although he did run 52:10 in a Great Britain race.

Last weekend, Jerry McCulla became only the sixth Strider to dip under the one hour barrier with a new personal best of 59:39.

Ultra runner Tom Humphries was the third Strider to finish in a new personal best time of 61:24.

Striders trio Wayne Greenfield, Jon Drake and Matt Huteson bunched up well and all three recorded best times of 63:15, 64:08 and 64:39 respectively.

Other Striders times were as follows: Craig Ward 70:09, Simon Hunt 71:57, Phil Marsland 72:12, Mark Rodgers 73:13, Carl Currie 73:16, Lee Fenlon 74:10, Gary Atkinson 74:39, Dave Bembridge 75:32, Kev Housham 76:53, Chris Litherland 80:03, Norman Hindley 80:38, Angela Overson 80:50, Glenn Peniston 81:10, Mark Cutts 84:01, Dan Gleave 86:17, Lotie Lindley 87:08, Vikki Hearn 88:00, Stephen Toward 87:53, Craig Williamson 89:21, Rebecca Cross 91:40, Tracey Moseley 97:17 and Donna Cook 97:18.

The Striders hold four training events per week.

A Tuesday evening session for junior athletes is followed by a senior pace-driven session.

There is also a Thursday night run of between three to four miles for new members and five to six miles for more experienced athletes.

On Sunday mornings members of the club meet for a long distance run , with details often posted on the club’s Facebook page.
