Beckingham Bowls Club were involved in a pair of finals in the last week of the Gainsborough Bowls League season.

First they met 2015 champions Melrose SSC in the Hazel Lawrence Trophy final, played at Roses.

They outbowled Melrose to win three of the four rinks, and take the trophy by 70 shots to 51.

Beckingham won the triples by 26-10, the Pairs by 19-11, the Singles by 17-15, but lost the difficult Fours 15-8.

The Trophy was presented to the team by GBL President Ray Robinson.

Two days later on Rose’s other green, Beckingham were looking to win the Kelsey Cup against third placed Marshall A.

In a very tight final, Beckingham had won two rinks by seven and five shots respectively, and lost one by six shots.

Beckingham had been leading the last rink to finish by 14-12, but Marshalls steadily pulled back to lead 22-15 with one end to play, putting them one up on aggregate.

In the gloom, Marshalls took one shot on the last end to win the Trophy by 76 shots to Beckingham’s 74.

Beckingham were disappointed obviously, but should look back on a very good and enjoyable season.

The Club’s Isle of Axholme Pensioners’ League team finished their 2015 campaign on 25th August with a 6-0 victory at Epworth, their seventh win on the trot.

In the second half of the season, they won seven out of eight matches, taking 41 of a possible 48 league points.

This may have put them in third position in the league, but the final positions were not available when these notes were compiled.

The I. of A. Evening League team played their penultimate match of the season at Owston Ferry on 28th August, and went down by eight points to two.

They won one rink by one shot, lost another by one shot, but lost heavily on the third rink to lose on aggregate shots.

On Saturday 5th September, the club will be holding their Club Triples competition, and members should be at the green by 9.30am to enable the draw to take place for a 100am start.
