WORKSOP Rugby Club are targetting second spot and promotion from the Midlands Four East North league.

Club captain Andy Slater believes that it’s a two horse race for the second promotion place, with top spot almost definitely heading to Boston.

The 37-year-old told the Guardian that unless his men slipped up, they’d be in with a chance of escaping the division.

“We’re third in the table, behind Boston and Skegness, although we were top for a while this season,” he said.

“Boston have had 12 points deducted for a brawl at the end of last season, but they’re beating everyone and they’ve gone top.”

“We’re two points behind Skegness with a game in hand, and you get four points for a win, so we’ve real chance of overtaking them.”

Worksop are yet to play Skegness at Stubbing Lane, and Slater believes that game will present an opportunity for his men to leapfrog their rivals.

“We lost to them away, but they don’t travel very well and their away form is very different to their home form.”

“We’ve got to face them at Stubbing Lane and hopefully we can turn them over.”

An emphasis on organisation and logistics has helped Worksop to a resurgence in form this season, and 12-year club veteran Slater, formerly captain of the second team, says going up would be a satisfying end to the campaign.

“We’re aiming for promotion and I think we can probably achieve it if we get the right results.”

“First place has almost certainly gone, but second is up for grabs. Ashfield in fourth could come through if ourselves or Skegness throw it away, but it’s between us now.”

On Saturday Slater’s men face Chesterfield away from home in what is a league and NLD cup double-header.
