Three defeats in four matches has left the title favourites hanging to top spot by a thread in the Monday Daytime Triples League at West Lindsey Indoor Bowls Club.
Ian Chappell’s team, which includes Bob and Wendy Baines, had seemed to be cruising to the championship. But they are now praying for a miracle after losing 14-13 to Marjorie Ward’s team, 16-11 to Trevor Gaines’s side and 14-13 to Ken Byfleet’s team. At least they avoided completed disaster when fighting back from 11-5 down to edge Pat Flegg’s team 13-12.
In second place, Marlene Mays’s team also appear flattered by their lofty status. For after comfortably beating three opponents near the bottom, they crashed 28-7 when tackled by Brenda Taylor’s team. Taylor’s troops also defeated Pat Flegg’s team 13-10 and Marjorie Ward’s team 17-13 and could soon be taking over at the top, even though they went down 15-11 to Jean Barnard’s team.
In the Wednesday Daytime Sets League, Bob Baines’s side remain unbeaten after winning four matches 4-2. But because of their inability to collect maximum points, first place still belongs to Keith Clark’s team.
