Worksop 59

Sheffield Suns 43

WORKSOP remain top of the table and unbeaten this season after a hard fought win over the Suns.

Steve Laws’ men held the Suns to their lowest tally all season, but left it until the last quarter to secure the points.

Brett Shelton and Mark Boot assumed coaching responsibilities with Lawes missing due to work commitments.

Worksop started brightly and raced into an 11-0 lead inside the first five minutes with Boot and Luke Richardson leading the charge.

Two more scores from Richardson took Worksop into a 15-5 lead at the first break.

With Worksop in control of the game, they made changes to the line-up in an attempt to share the court time around, but it quickly became apparent that there were too many changes at once.

Worksop lost their rhythm and were soon caught by the Suns who only trailed by four at the half. They remained poor at the offensive end in the third quarter but were strong on defence with Shelton, Adam Drabble and Andy Fagan being well marshalled by Boot.

Adam Kingswood and Mark Rowland picked up some important steals that turned defence into offence early in the third and Worksop’s European pair Martins Evalds and Jurijs Kamaltdinovs with both getting among the points. Kamaltdinovs also grabbed some key rebounds.

The final quarter started with Worksop 31-32 down, but like so often this season Worksop managed to pull it together when it mattered. Six free-throws out of six early in the final period helped Worksop take control. Kingswood and Richardson then put the game beyond the Suns, before two late three-pointers from Shelton put a gloss on the scoreline. Worksop: Boot 16, Richardson 13, Shelton 13, Kingswood 8, Drabble 4, Kamaltdinovs 2, Evalds 2, Rowland 1, Fagan 0.
