Organisers planning a new term

As the curtain closes on the Worksop Snooker League season, organisers Antony Coupe and Mick Camm are already plotting the next one.

With 27 teams in the league, snooker is still proving a popular sport in the Guardian readership area.

And the likes of Notts Arena are proving, through their academy, that it’s a sport for young people.

Coupe explained how the league is organised.

“Fixtures run between September through to April with one league fixture a week throughout the season, the teams separated into two divisions,” he said.

“All teams need is a venue to play from, four players each week who play one frame each and every frame won gives you a point on the league table.”

“It doesn’t matter if you aren’t very good, as the league has a handicap system where every player has a handicap mark depending on matches won or lost.”

The league also runs five other competitions.

The Team Knockout Cup competition is a four team aggregate where scores are carried forward from the previous frame.

There are two individual events – one a handicap competition, the other a scratch, played with no handicap start which is for the more elite players.

Other competitions include two handicap doubles events in the Bassetlaw Pairs, a 3-frame aggregate and the League Pairs, which is a straight best of three competition.

Finally, team captains can opt to play in the Captains Cup Knockout, which is a singles competition played off the handicap marks for the team captains only.

The cost to enter a snooker team in the league is £12 per team for the season, £2 per registered player with £2 table levies per week, which goes to the prize money and the general running of the league.

The annual presentation night is on 15th June from 7.30pm at Tickhill Institute.

Prize money will go to charity if winners do not attend to collect.

The AGM is on 23rd June at Stanley Street at 10am.

Any letters for the AGM must be with the secretary before 9th June. Teams without a representative will start the season with a four-point deduction.
