And they took on the 62-mile route along the Cleveland Way from Guisborough to Filey to complete the series, passing through coastal resorts and fishing villages including Scarborough, Robin Hood’s Bay and Saltburn.

Both Striders made improvements from the 2013 event when they finished joint 11th in 11 hours 45 minutes.

Humphries completed the arduous challenge in 11 hours five minutes and 54 seconds to finish fourth.

McCulla was seventh in a time of 11 hours 13 minutes 57 seconds.

In the overall series classification, McCulla took third position.

He told the Standard: “It’s been absolutely amazing, such a test of your mind and body.”

“From New Year’s Day nearly suffering from mild hypothermia to almost getting blown off the cliffs at Whitby.”

“It’s a constant battle, just to stay fit and get to the start line.”

“But in such a beautiful part of the world, with the support of my fiancée and fellow runners, I feel really lucky to have done it.”

As the cross country season approaches, all Gainsborough and Morton Striders are invited to register their interest in competing in the Lincolnshire Cross Country League and the English Club Cross Country Relay at Mansfield on Saturday 2nd November.
