The talk around the dinner table at one Gainsborough household this summer will revolve almost exclusively around swimming, cycling and running.

Meet the Grococks – Amy, a World Duathlon competitor, and Stuart, about to embark on his first ever half Ironman event.

Stuart, 42, is hoping that his wife’s exploits and knowhow can inspire him to achieve his target for the Cleveland Steelman race on 19th July.

The EMI Engineering worker is training hard for a 2km lake swim, 58 mile bike ride on a hilly course and a 13 mile running section.

Although training is going well, he’s hoping an appeal in the Gainsborough Standard will boost his ‘off course’ ambition of raising cash for a worthy cause.

He said: “I have only done sprint triathlons so far, which take me about an hour and eight minutes, amd I’m hoping to come in just under six hours for this race so its quite an increase in distance.”

“With the help of World Duathlon competitor wife Amy on the bike and running, I feel I am as ready as I will ever be.”

“I have a charity page on the just giving website with donations going to Cancer Research, but I seem to be stuck on £300 and was hoping to raise £500.”

While Stuart is taking a step into the unknown with this competition, brother Steven – formerly of Gainsborough – will be at the business end of the competition.

Stuart said: “My brother Steven has been competing for some time now, representing Team GB at triathlon and he has achieved sub 10 hour full Ironman times.”

“We are both members of Brigg based Lincsquad Tri Club and he has been helping me with my open water swimming in the river Ancholme.”

Stuart is training around six or seven hours per week, and working hard to improve his diet to shed the necessary pounds before race day.

“Any contributions will spur me on when I start flagging halfway through the run,” he added.
