Hail the junior team of Gainsborough Golf Club who have been crowned county champions after a thrilling play-off final triumph.
Gainsborough gained their success in the Lincolnshire Union of Golf Clubs Junior League, which is open to all the junior teams of clubs across the county.
They won the northern league, while Spalding lifted the southern league title, so they came together for a play-off at Market Rasen Golf Club to determine the overall champions.
Two teams of six players contested a four-ball better ball match, off handicap, over 18 holes. And supporters of the two clubs saw a closely contested clash that produced some golf of the highest standard.
Gainsborough were victorious by 2.5 points to 0.5 and duly received their championship salver and shield, plus individual mementoes for each player, from league chairman Keith Farrow. They will now represent Lincolnshire in next year’s all-England finals.
The six players who made up the Gainsborough team were: Ben Grayson, who was captain, Ryan Phillips, Lily Farr, Ben Danby, Henry Cawthorne and William Swann. Their success was also a feather in the cap for the club’s hard-working junior section organiser, John Barley.
