Champions off to an ordinary start with loss and close call

Gainsborough Bowls League champions Melrose SSC have had an ordinary start to the defence of their title, losing at Beckingham and squeezing past Rose A.

At Beckingham, Melrose have so often looked like losing but turned it around.

However this time a Melrose rink that looked like winning had to settle for a draw on the last end, and on another rink the Melrose trio looked like winning but the Beckingham skip moved the jack with the last bowl of the match to ensure a draw.

Beckingham won 6-4 (76-72).

On Wednesday Melrose visited Rose A who had just beaten North Wheatley 8-2 (87-62).

Melrose were made to work hard and the result was in some doubt but Melrose came through 6-4 (83-73).

On Wednesday Beckingham visited Misterton, who had a bye on Monday, and Beckingham’s sharp players gave Misterton’s rusty players a bowls lesson in an emphatic 10-0 (95-39) victory.

Scotter 1 who, have won the title five out of the last six years, beat Scotter 2 10-0 (100-49) and then visited Marton GB and won 10-0 (109-61) to lead the table.

In-form Marshall A beat Marshall Sports 8-2 (101-43) and then had their bye.

Owston Ferry have had their usual very good start by beating visitors Marton GB 7-3 (85-63) and then visited Marshall Sports and for the fourth year in a row came away narrow winners 8-2 (73-65).

On Wednesday Scotter 2 had their chance to record a win against visitors North Wheatley, both teams well beaten on the Monday.

However, the home side were surprisingly poor and the visitors comfortably won 8-2 (88-60).
