Parish Church Primary School took a group of talented Y5 and 6 pupils to the British Biathlon Championships in Solihull, and Brandon Smith was the star of the show.
Having qualified by competing in Bingham back in September, the children were keen to match up against the very best in the country.
An 800m run was followed by a 50m swim, and the Parish students were cheered on by parents, teachers and a mascot as they all finished in the top 50 in the country.
Smith, however, who competed in the U10 Boys group, swam superbly and ran with great determination to finish with a fantastic points total of 2,666, securing a trophy for fifth place.
The delighted youngster said: It was great, a super experience for me. I saw lots of children I have swum against before and that made me go faster.”
The school’s Biathlon coach John Anderson was understandably proud.
He said: “To be part of the British Championships is really inspiring for the children and a great honour for the school. To see a member of Parish School standing there with a fifth placed trophy was fantastic, not only for his family and our school, but the whole of Gainsborough as well.”
“We are now all waiting with baited breath to see who has qualified for the Schools Finals in April in a secret London sporting venue, as this is being announced in January.”
