Gainsborough Town put the exclamation mark on their 2013/14 season with their first piece of Lincolnshire Football League silverwear.

A 6-0 victory over Horncastle Town landed management team Steve Hutchinson and Richard Mallett and their squad the Supplementary Cup.

Gainsborough travelled to Lincoln United’s ground on Saturday for the final, looking to continue the excellent form that saw them win the final 11 games of the season.

That run of victories sealed third in the league, and filled them with confidence ahead of the cup clash.

Starting in their familiar 4-4-1-1 formation, Gainsborough went into the lead after a quarter of an hour, when Leigh Hutchinson crossed from the right and Kieron Locking headed home.

But Horncastle frustrated their opponents, forcing Hutchinson and Mallett into a double substitution and formation switch to a 4-4-2 system.

It proved a masterstroke, as replacement Kraig Wharton smashed in from 10 yards, although he was injured in the act of scoring and had to be replaced by Steve Hutchinson.

The influential Greg Andrews unlocked the back four time and time again, and set up the third goal, Hutchinson going in one-on-one to round the keeper and find the net.

Josh Nichol, returning to the side he began the season with, after a spell with Brigg Town, got in on the act to score the fourth for Gainsborough.

And the fifth wasn’t long in arriving, Nichol and Hutchinson combining before the former hit the net once more.

Nichol then returned the favour in a similar move, Hutchinson finishing it off and giving Town their sixth.

A club spokesman said the cup victory was a fine reward for their efforts during the campaign.

“After a frustrating season for club officials and players alike, this was a great end to the season.”

“Without John Anderson’s hard work and commitment and Richard Mallett’s passion for the club, we may well have not made it through the season.”

“But the players responded magnificently in every aspect and Saturday’s win was just reward for everyone involved in the club.”

Town are looking for sponsors for next season.
