The former theatre and bingo hall, on Trinity Street, has been out of use for a number of years and campaigners have called for the building to be restored to its former glory.

The theatre has stood since the 1800s and was used as a bingo hall for more than 50 years.

West Lindsey District Council confirmed this week the building has been purchased – but it has not revealed who by and what their plans are for the site.

Councillor Rick Craig, who has campaigned for the theatre to be restored to a performance stage, believes it could become a restaurant.

He said: “From what I understand, the King’s Theatre is to become restaurant.

“Despite it being a shame that it is not going to become a theatre once more, it does mean the building is receiving the care and attention it so desperately needs.

“It will no doubt be a grand restaurant, while also maintaining its character and being brought back into use for the community and creating jobs.”

Coun Matthew Boles, Gainsborough Town Council leader, said: “While we’re still unsure as to the exact final plans for the building, it is great to see such an iconic Gainsborough building being brought back to life and given a much-needed facelift.

“As one of the main entry and exit roads into the town, Trinity Street is well overdue a facelift, so this development has to be welcomed and the developers congratulated.

“Hopefully it can be the catalyst for more investment and development.

“As for its future use, I have heard various rumours.

“I just hope that, whatever it ends up being, it is an asset to Gainsborough and that the community use it and make it a success. People often criticise Gainsborough for having ‘nothing’, but if we do not support and use new ventures then these will not succeed and others will not follow.

“We all have to support the town and its businesses and facilities.”

Coun Barry Coward, also from the town council, said: “I have heard it is going to be a performance space for disabled children.

“Turning it back into a performance space can only be a good thing for the town.”
