Sun shines on show day

VILLAGE life was on display in Sturton by Stow over the weekend, and the sun came out for the special occasion.

An impressive range of produce, plants, cakes and conserves were on display at the 125th annual show by Sturton and Stow Agricultural and Horticultural Association.

The colourful array of home grown and hand made entries were examined by the judges and rosettes were awarded for the best in each category.

Over at Gate Burton, meanwhile, the 74th annual Tractor and Horse Ploughing Match was under way, organised by Sturton, Stow and District Ploughing Society.

The brute force of man, machine and horse was put to the test, churning the ground at Prospect Farm with the kind permission of Messrs G and K Worrall.

“It was a very successful event and we were extremely lucky with the weather,” said society secretary Mrs Lorna Darby. “We had been concerned about the conditions, with the last few weeks having seen so much rain. But it was fine and everyone went away happy.”

Competitors and spectators came from miles around the see the ploughing action, even as far as Knutsford, Cheshire.

Prize and cup winners included Ashley Boyles, Geoff Fretwell, Tim Waudby, Simon Durant, Dick Dennett, Mike Watkins, Kevin Kelly, John Plowright, Chris Rainthorpe, John Crowder, Steve Glavin and Brian Carter.
