A Dinnington man assaulted his friend in a row over how the victim was treating his partner, a court heard.

Shaun Carroll, 46, of Leopold Avenue, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Rotherham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The court heard the victim was in his home at around 5.40am on Monday with his partner, when Carroll called round to visit.

Mark Hughes, prosecuting, said that Carroll appeared to be drunk to his friend.

“He said they sat chatting and drinking when Carroll suddenly stood up and appeared as if he wanted to fight,” Mr Hughes continued.

“The victim told him to sit down, but he punched him once to the face using his fist.”

“The victim was in shock and in pain. His nose was bleeding and his face and upper lip were throbbing,” he said.

Mr Hughes told the court that Carroll then sat down, before getting up again and punching his victim in the face a second time.

“He shouted at Carroll to get out. When he had gone the victim went to a phone box to call the police,” added Mr Hughes.

The court heard that Carroll’s victim suffered bruising to his left eye as well as cuts to his eye, the bridge of his nose and left cheek and a swollen lip in the assault.

He also underwent a CT scan at Rotherham Hospital, but the results of that were not yet known.

Carroll was arrested later that morning and admitted the assault to police during interview.

Andrew Walker, defending Carroll, said the three friends had known each other for ‘many years’ and that their problems stemmed from an abuse of alcohol.

“A few days before this assault Mr Carroll had told his friend he shouldn’t keep assaulting his partner,” said Mr Walker.

“Mr Carroll told him that if he kept doing it, he would assault him.”

“He thought that he was being laughed at and that’s what caused him to see red and carry out the threat he made earlier,” he added.

The District Judge ordered that a pre-sentence report be prepared in the case.

Carroll was remanded in custody.

He will next appear for sentencing at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday 12th March at 10am.
