Labour’s Sarah Champion has won the Rotherham by-election becoming the first woman to hold the seat.

The chief executive of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice secured a majority of 46 per cent with 9,866 votes.

UKIP’s Jane Collins came second with 4,648 votes and the British National Party’s Marlene Guest came third on 1,804 votes.

The poll was triggered after the resignation of former Labour minister Denis MacShane over dishonest expenses claims.
