Hucknall cadet Ruby Taylor has been named as this year’s St John Ambulance Regional Cadet of the Year for the East Midlands.

Ruby aged 17, who volunteers at the charity’s Hucknall Unit, triumphed at the national selection event held earlier this month at Gilwell Park Scout Activity Centre in London.

The three-day competition saw 34 of the very best cadets from across the country take part in some tough tasks to win one of eight regional roles.

Ruby will now represent St John Ambulance cadets in the East Midlands over the coming year.

She said, ‘First aid is possibly the most useful life skill you can have as you never know when someone will need it.

“I once helped a girl who cut her head open at a cheer leading contest and also went to the aid of a lady who collapsed on the tram.

‘I’m also keen to spread the message with other young people during my time as Regional Cadet of the Year.

“We have about 30 cadets at my unit and as lead cadet I teach small groups first aid skills.

“Caring for people is my passion and I want to make a difference. Every time I put on my uniform at an event I feel immensely proud to be part of St John Ambulance.”

Studying A levels in psychology, biology, photography and French, Ruby also finds time to work at a butchers with her Dad, Chris, where she helps make pies and maintains hygiene while being on hand to deal with any minor cuts.

Carl Makins, regional youth manager for St John Ambulance said; ‘First aid is an important skill for people of all ages to learn.

“Young people, like Ruby, are great advocates of this message.

“St John Ambulance also provides young people with tremendous opportunities to develop a wide range of knowledge and skills in other areas and to be part of their local community.

“Ruby demonstrated tremendous dedication and enthusiasm over the course of the selection weekend and we are delighted that she is representing young people who learn first aid, in the East Midlands.”
