TENSE weeks of waiting were over as hundreds of GCSE pupils across the district tore open those all-important results envelopes last Thursday.

Students from Retford Elizabethan Academy and Retford Oaks gathered nervously at their schools to find out how they had fared in their exams.

There were celebrations at Elizabethan Academy have 59 per cent of students achieved five or more higher grades, including English and Maths - an increase of eight per cent to last years.

Results also show that 88 per cent achieved five or more higher grades across a range of subjects, with more results of vocational qualifications still to be factored in.

Scoring exceptional results in this year’s exams was Worksop student Peter Cowburn who got an impressive 13 A*s in his GCSEs.

The 16-year-old, who has represented the UK in European Maths Competitions, said he was over the moon with his results.

“I’m delighted. It couldn’t have gone better,” he said.

Thomas Barber, Mark Barnes and Kim Fleming also did themselves proud, scoring several A* and A grades.

Special mention also goes to Khalil Adesanya, Zoe Firth, Kyle Fitzpatrick, Kimberley Moore, Helen Walker and Elizabeth Wisher who all gained A*-B grades.

Principal Lynn Kenworthy said she was delighted to see so many delighted faces on the day and congratulated everyone for their hard work.

“This was a hard-working year group - a talented group of young people with huge potential as they move on to Post-16 education or training,” she said.

“A significant number of students will be continuing with us into the sixth form at the Retford Post-16 Centre.”

“Thank you to all the staff and parents who supported them with their studies and put up with their (small!) tantrums and stress levels!”

Celebrations were also the order of the day at Retford Oaks Academy where students also gained an impressive set of results in their GCSEs.

Headteacher David Gibson congratulated everyone for their hard work and dedication in preparing for the exams.

“It’s a very good result - a combination of hard work and dedication by pupils, staff and parents,” he said.

“It’s a credit to them and they should be rightly proud of what they have achieved.”
