A two minute silence will take place outside the Guildhall in Marshall’s Yard, to pay tribute to the men of the 4th and 5th Battalions of the Lincolnshire Regiment, who lost their lives at the Hohenzollern Redoubt during the battle.
The Vice Chairman of West Lindsey District Council, Coun Roger Patterson, will lead the small ceremony on Tuesday, October 13, by the flagpole.
On October 13, 1915, the 46th North Midlands Division, which included the Lincolnshire Battalions, took part in an almost impossible mission to take the heavily defended Hohenzollern Redoubt. Within half an hour of the Lincolnshire men going ‘over the top’ more than 880 were dead. In a single day the 46th Division suffered 3,763 casualties.
The civic flag will also be dipped before the two-minute silence as respects are paid to the thousands of Lincolnshire men who were killed. The ceremony will start at 12.50pm in order for the two minutes silence to commence at 1pm.
