Students from Queen Elizabeth’s High School in Gainsborough will join other students and adults from across the county later this month to perform Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at Lincoln Cathedral.

The students will perform this inspiring music on Saturday, January 30.

Carmina Burana is heralded, one of the most popular of choral works.

It is considered hugely satisfying to sing and hear.

Kate Witney, who is co-ordinating the project for Lincolnshire Music Service, said: “This is real community music-making.

“Members of adult choirs are singing alongside school pupils and the performers range in age fromseven to 84 years-old.

“We even have three complete families taking part.

“There was a wonderful atmosphere at the rehearsal day in November and we are very excited about the performance.”

The full orchestra also includes students, working alongside adult professionals.

The performance offers a rare opportunity to hear Carmina Burana performed by the forces for which it was originally written.

The soloists are recent graduates from the Royal Northern College of Music.

Carmina Burana sets poems from the middle-ages, but their themes are as compelling to us now as they were then.

These include the fickleness of fortune, the pleasures of the spring, the joys and perils of love, drinking, gambling and feasting.

The opening movement, ‘O Fortuna’, is probably the best-known excerpt and is used on the X-Factor as the entrance music for the judges when they first take the stage.

But the rest of the work features music equally thrilling, alongside tenderness, lyricism and a great deal of humour.

As well as Gainsborough, students from Boston, Grantham, Horncastle, Lincoln, North Kesteven, Sleaford and Welton are all taking part in the performance.

Ther performance starts at 7pm and tickets are available from Lincoln Cathedral box office on 01522 561600 or online at or on the door.
