Paul Howitt-Cowan was the speaker at the meeting on Monday 19th August when his theme was The Environs Of The Old Hall. The conservation area around the Old Hall was the subject matter, involving familiar places including the Parish Church, John Robinson URC, Gainsborough House, the library and the surrounding streets. Particularly the old mart was described both in its siting and its purpose. Centrally, the Old Hall was discussed, its origins and development, as well as parts of the original design which have disappeared, while often still being traceable through old prints and research into that area. Paul also spoke about leading figures to do with Gainsborough and its history, all of this illustrated by old prints and photographs which helped to bring to life a fascinating portrayal of this important part of the town.
