On Monday 26th January, Captain Jeremy Ferguson-Smith of Gainsborough Salvation Army spoke about the origins of the Salvation Army, its involvement in social issues and particularly the question of people trafficking. He introduced the morning by talking a little about his own background – and we were all given ten seconds to do likewise.

This is a special year for the Army, as it is its 150th anniversary, which will rightly involve great celebrations. We heard about the founder, William Booth, his family, the first meeting places and the origin of the name Salvation Army. We saw how from its earliest days the Army sought to address poverty and deprivation, as well as bringing the Christian message. Through all those years up to the present day Jeremy told us how the Army sought to influence opinion on social structures and the law, as well as ministering to those in need. Bringing this up to date, he spoke about the issue of people trafficking, helping us to understand what that actually means. The extent of the problem is clear as over two million people still live in slavery, part of a £24 billion pound ‘business’, throughout the world – including the UK. Along with continuing need which has to be addressed, Jeremy explained how the Salvation Army seeks to care for those rescued from traffickers, and to give them a safe and dignified future.
