A POPULAR and imaginative teacher from Gainsborough College has been awarded The Gainsborough Standard’s Teacher’s Rose for her unwavering dedication and commitment.
Business teacher Alex Cooke has been teaching for over 14 years and has taught at the college since it was on its previous site at the High School.
After plotting with her class who nominated her, we went along to take Alex by surprise and present her with her rose.
“This means a lot to me and will really keep me going through the trials and tribulations of the marking and back-chat!” she joked.
“It’s quite out of the blue but absolutely brilliant. It just feels really nice to be appreciated and makes you feel like it’s all worthwhile and that you’re making a difference.”
“I’d like to say a huge thank you very much to my class.”
Alex said that her class have all bonded with each other and work together very well.
“My class are a great group and make a wonderful team,” she said.
“They work really hard and we have a lot of fun, but get a lot of work done too.”
“We do a lot of team building and everybody chips in and helps each other but I’m still the boss.”
She continued: “There’s great respect and I think that works well and helps everyone learn.”
She added: “We’ve got a great relationship and we talk about everything in general. We discuss all sorts of things like the situation in Japan and cover a lot more than just the course - we look at the bigger picture.”
Alex was nominated by two of her students Nikki Donson, 24, and Lucy Clayton, 16.
“She’s just absolutely brilliant and even left one of her other courses to come and help us,” said Nikki.
“She really does everything she can - she’s amazing.”
Nikki added: “She’s so committed to us and very enthusiastic. She’s stuck her neck out and stuck with us to help us with everything.”
Lucy said: “She’s always been there for us.”
“We are supposed to have two teachers but one of them has been off with back problems and Alex couldn’t have done more to see us through. She’s just so amazing.”
