A vulnerable Doncaster pensioner narrowly escaped death after a breeze block was thrown through her window, leaving her open to the freezing cold elements overnight.
June Green, aged 83, of Lonsdale Avenue, Intake, who has been victim to two previous burglaries, was tucked up in bed when the incident happened, luckily not sat in her usual position by the window where the potentially lethal block came crashing through.
Daughter Gail Benson-Green, who lives in Hampshire, said that her mum is almost bed ridden and suffers from ill health and dementia.
She explained: “My mum rang me just before 9pm on Sunday night to say someone had thrown something at her window. I asked her what sort of damage had been caused but she said it was just a crack.
“As I live 250 miles away I said I would ring the council in the morning and get them to come out and board it up.
“When one of my mum’s carers went round at 8.50am the following morning she found half a breeze block in the lounge which had been thrown through the window. If she had been sat in her normal position when it happened it could have killed her.
“I’m amazed she didn’t freeze to death, fortunately she was in bed covered with plenty of blankets but obviously it’s a worry.”
She added: “Due to the footprints outside, the carers think the person who threw the breeze block actually entered the property, although they were not sure if anything had been stolen.
“Fortunately because of my mum’s ill health she doesn’t seem to have realised the enormity of what has happened and the seriousness of the situation.”
Mrs Benson-Green has thanked the Danum Healthcare team, under Intake supervisor Gaynor Mathieson, for their invaluable help this week, she said: “They have been really good and I’m very thankful to them for dealing with the matter.”
Police confirmed they were called at 9.30am on December 29 by a member of the public reporting damage to a property.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 203 of 29 December 2014.
