Gainsborough’s independent retailers are calling on residents to rediscover their local high street and show their support for local businesses.

The group has lined up a day of activities and promotions including a special independent retailers market on Saturday to celebrate Independent Retailer Month.

The Gainsborough Town Partnership hopes the event will encourage residents to shop locally, rather than at big-name supermarkets, online, or at out-of-town centres.

July marks the UK’s third Independent Retailer Month, which aims to raise awareness of local businesses and increase footfall into town centres, helping retailers stay open for business, and reducing the number of empty shops on the high street.

Samantha Dodd, Gainsborough town manager said: “Independent Retailer Month is a really important time for shops and business like those in Gainsborough, and we’re calling on shoppers to come along and see what we have to offer.”

“The number of empty shops on British high streets has hit an all-time high this year, and the only way to stop that happening is for people to visit them, and support them.”

“While many people do shop for convenience online, or at one-stop centres, there’s no substitute for great customer service and that sense of community that comes with shopping close to home, and we want to remind people of that.”

On Saturday Gainsborough Independent Retailers will take part in an Independent’s Market in the town centre.

Held in the market place between 9am and 4pm, it will showcase the excellent range of products and services on offer from Gainsborough’s independent retailers, including fashion, food and drink and gifts.

There will also be a visit from the town crier, a vintage bus and buskers performing.

“There are lots of lovely independent shops in Gainsborough and people need to support them,” said Dawn Barron from the Independent Retailers Group.

“Help us to make Gainsborough an even better town to live and work.”
