AN innovative and imaginative Gainsborough business has been rewarded for years of hard work at this year’s Gainsborough Business Awards.

Smiffy’s wigmakers and fancy dress specialists won Business of The Year at the Gainsborough Business Awards at a ceremony at Gainsborough Golf Club last month.

As a family business, Smiffy’s employ over 250 staff from the Gainsborough area and take over £40 million in annual turnover.

Commercial Director Simon Smithers says it both a pleasure and privilege to be part of such a unique company that’s successful in such an interesting and diverse market.

“Our belief is that what we do is try and make fun for people,” says Simon.

“People buy our stuff because they are going to have fun.”

“We want to be the best in everything we do.”

He continued: “We take pride in everything that we do and it’s great to have that recognition that we’ve done a decent job.”

Smiffy’s are always expanding in the UK and exporting overseas. They have worked hard to see their customer base and profits grow massively year on year, but Simon says it’s important that business is based in Gainsborough.

“Most of our staff are local people,” says Simon.

“Gainsborough is at the heart of the business. Smiffy’s has been here for over 100 years and we have a commitment to the town.”

“If we were anywhere else we wouldn’t have the same history or style of business.”

That has certainly shaped us and given us balance. We’ve put a lot of money into the infrastructure to create a good working environment.”

Simon says that the secret to their success is their attention to detail, as well as passion and innovation.

“The world of fancy dress has changed. When people go out in costume, they want to look good, especially girls.”

“We have a great eye for detail here so you know you’re getting a high quality product and not something tacky. We’re stretching the parameters of what fancy dress might be.”

Simon adds: “We’d like to win it next year because there is no reason why we shouldn’t still be the best.”

Gainsborough Business Awards organiser Kelly Taylor from Langley’s Solicitors, said: “The category of Gainsborough Business of The Year was very difficult to judge, as there were so many applicants and they were of such a high standard,” says Kelly.

“Smiffy’s however, is an international business based in Gainsborough.”

“It is a real success story showing year on year growth, even in these difficult times.”

“The award was very well deserved.”
