A 1950s view of North Street

THIS week’s picture features a view of part of North Street and was taken in the 1950s.

Although some of the buildings on the left are still standing, much else has changed.

The tall building in the centre background is the old gasworks which was demolished in the late 1950s/early 1960s.

Round the back of the works was Alma Place, while the houses to the right of centre were demolished and new houses and flats have sprung up there over the last few years.

To the right can be seen the sign Ebenezer Place which consisted of a lane leading to a courtyard featuring several houses - a common feature in Gainsborough in those days.
