THE songs of praise will be resounding through Sturton-by-Stow’s Methodist Church at the rate of 83 tunes per hour when organist Dennis Gilbert plays in a marathon of 1,000 hymns.

Dennis, of Tillbridge Road, Sturton-by-Stow, decided to take part in the marathon because it is the chapel’s anniversary and he will celebrate his own 50 years as an organist as he started playing as a 10-year-old boy.

He plans to start the marathon at 8am on 15th March and carry on until the early evening. “I hope to finish 950 by about 7.30pm and then I will play people’s favourite 50 hymns,” explained Dennis.

He will be accompanied by soloists for half of those 50 hymns which, like the rest, will be chosen from the Methodist hymn book.
