11th May, 1962: HOUSE STRUCK BY THUNDERBOLT
WINDOWS were shattered, water mains fractured, tiles and guttering torn off and television aerials destroyed when a thunderbolt struck a house in Cecil Street, Gainsborough, last night.
Water mains in the street were fractured, and the police were taking precautions in case gas and electricity mains were damaged.
Mr Arthur Bell, occupier of the house which was struck, said: “I was in the kitchen having dinner and my wife was upstairs in the back bedroom preparing to go out when I heard the explosion.”
A large gaping hole was torn in the roof, electricity meters were wrenched from the walls and the house was filled with smoke, soot and dirt.
