Rail bridge renewal in 1969

WITH the operation to replace the old railway bridge on Lea Road completed just over a week ago, here’s a photograph of another railway bridge renewal in Gainsborough which happened more than 40 years ago.

In 1969 the then British Rail undertook the task of renewing the bridge over Spital Terrace which carried the Retford to Cleethorpes railway line.

This wasn’t done in quite the sophisticated way of the Lea Road one, but they endeavoured to cause the minimum amount of disruption to both road and rail traffic.

Nevertheless, temporary traffic lights had to be set up to regulate road traffic as single file was the order of the day.
