The new season of Gainsborough and District Ladies Luncheon Club began with disappointment when it was announced that the speaker Paul Whittaker, founder of the charity Music and the Deaf, was unable to attend due to illness. The disappointment was short-lived however when Andrew Hesslewood, Paul’s replacement was introduced.
Andrew is also involved with the charity and usually accompanies Paul, who is profoundly deaf, as his signer. This was Andrew’s debut as a speaker but he coped admirably. The aim of Music and the Deaf is to help deaf children to make friends and build up their confidence through music. Andrew, who is a hearing musician, was invited by Paul to join one of the workshops and now leads singing workshops two days a week with Paul. The workshops have spread to many different locations in the country and their headquarters are to move to the Eureka attraction in Halifax.
