A new name on the theatre scene in Gainsborough and Lincolnshire, The Addhock Theatre Company, are presenting a one-off performance of the classic drama The Lion in Winter at the Old Nick Theatre in Gainsborough next week.

Written by James Golman, The Lion in Winter, by is a modern day classic.

Comedic in tone and dramatic in action, the play tells the story of the Henry II and his family during the Christmas of 1183.

Set at Henry’s castle, the play opens with the arrival of Henry’s wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, whom he has had imprisoned since 1173.

The story concerns the gamesmanship between Henry, Eleanor, their sons Richard, Geoffrey, and John, and their Christmas Court guest, the King of France, Philip II Augustus who was the son of Eleanor’s ex-husband, Louis VII of France.

Also involved is Philip’s half-sister Alais, who has been at court since she was betrothed to Richard at aged eight, but has since become Henry’s mistress.

The story was made famous by the 1968 film of the same name starring Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn.

It has also been revived several times both in the West End and on Broadway, where the original production in 1966 saw Rosemary Harris win a Tony Award for her performance at Eleanor.

Addhock’s production is at The Old Nick on Wednesday, June 8 at 7.30pm.
