Gainsborough Trinity 4-1 Redditch United
GAINSBOROUGH Trinity claimed their first home win of the season thanks to a vastly improved second half, and a lot of luck in the first.
The Blues were lucky to still be in the game at half time, following the worst 45 minutes of the season.
Redditch had several opportunities, not only take the lead, but to of won the game by the interval.
Owen Storey was the main thorn in Trinity's side, having threegolden chances to give the visitors the lead.
Storey brought the best out of Adam Sollitt after he charged down Martin Drury's clearance. The pacey wide man also saw a header strike the post and a powerful volley fly just over.
The game also saw some farcical refereeing. James Lukic lost a boot, and was ordered to leave the field to replace it by the referee.
The situation was made worse as the blues were defending a throw deep in their own half. It was an incident which enraged blues boss Steve Charles.
By some miracle it was the home side that took the lead on the half hour. Louis McMahon got behind the United defence a drilled in a cross to the near post. The cross was met by Simon Bird and the unfortunate Storey managed to beat his own keeper.
This didn't spell the end of the danger for the Blues, as Aman Verma saw a spectacular overhead kick graze the outside of Sollitt's post.
Trinity went inside at half-time and were no doubt met by some very stern words from manager Steve Charles.
The Blues emerged a better side for the second half, and immediately doubled the lead through the most unlikely source.
Neal Spafford, making his home debut, surged forward deep into Redditch territory. Spafford looked to exchange passes with McMahon on the edge of the area, but McMahon unleashed a powerful shot, which was parried by Danny Lewis.
Spafford, however, had continued his run and picked up the rebound to chip his shot over the prone Lewis.
This second seemed to settle the home side, who began to look more composed on the ball and McMahon headed a Adam Smith cross narrowly wide.
McMahon also shot wide after Bird chose to play his strike partner in when a shot may have been a better option.
McMahon himself won the penalty that brought Trinity's third. He was blocked after cutting inside Liam Murray, and he got up to drive the resulting spot kick into the bottom left corner on 67.
The game the ambled towards its conclusion. However, in injury time it sparked back into life.
Matt Austin won a tackle in midfield, the loose ball braking to Chris Hall. Hall drove at the tired United defence, cut inside and coolly lifted his shot over the advancing Lewis.
Redditch managed a consolation goal through skipper Lee Downes, who struck a rasping shot into Sollitt's top corner from the edge of the box.
Even the final whistle didn't bring an end to the incident. Adam Smith was lucky not to see red after raising his hands into the face of an opponent. The referee capped a poor afternoon's work by only booking a very lucky Smith
