Dirt bike racer Kurt Griffiths will feel right at home this weekend, as he competes in the 2014 Garmin Arenacross Tour at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena.

The Worksop youngster has his sights set on the top of the rankings in the 85cc class competition, after a victory in the previous round at Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle last Sunday.

Over 5,000 cheered the 11-year-old to that win, and he’s hoping for an even better reception in Sheffield on Saturday.

“It was buzzing to be stood on top of the podium in front of so many people and I’m feeling great after winning in Newcastle,” he said.

“It was the best feeling ever.”

“I would love to do it again in Sheffield - we can hear the crowds from under our helmets and the louder they are the harder we push ourselves.”

“Sheffield is my local area and I’ve got lots of family and friends going – I’m really looking forward to it.”

Griffiths is just two points behind the class leader, after a successful step up from the 65cc machines.

The Serlby Park Academy student has missed the podium just twice in five races so far.

It all began on a quad bike when he was just four years of age.

Proud mum Lisa told the Guardian: “He’s a typical adrenaline junkie.”

“He progressed to mini-motorbikes, really showed a talent for it and began racing as soon as he was able too.”

Having watched him compete since he was six, it was a memorable and emotional moment for Lisa last weekend when he stood on top of the podium.

She said: “I felt so so proud, my heart was beating out of my chest.”

“It’s a scary feeling when you see you child come flying out the gate with 11 other kids, all aiming for that one small narrow corner.”

“One false move and he could have a broken limb, the tracks have been very technical and tough – even the professional riders have found it tough.”

The series, an indoor offspring of Motocross racing, pits racers against purpose-build, jump-filled dirt tracks.

Once the Sheffieldleg of the tour is complete, Griffiths will look forward to the final stage at Wembley.

The Motorpoint Arena will play host to the sixth stop on the seven-round 2014 Arenacross tour.

Tickets start at £11 for children and £20.90 for adults.
