Gainsborough Aegir Cycling Club paid tribute to a fallen rider, before the weekend’s second speed judging contest.

Aegir member Colin Smith died suddenly last week, and his club-mates paused for a moment of silence on Sunday ahead of their contest.

Trevor Halstead told the Standard: “He will be missed by all his fellow cycling club members and friends.”

The speed judging contest was made difficult due to a strong west wind.

Time keeper for the event was Hedley Stennett.

The riders were directed to the speed judging circuit at Upton long Lane.

With watches, computers and mobile phones handed in to the time keeper, the cyclists were set off at one minute intervals to ride the 4.2 mile circular route.

Leaving Upton Corner the riders made their way down Long Lane, turning left onto Padmoor Lane, then left into Upton.

Leaving the village past Sturgate Airfield they progressed to Heapham, passing Hewitt’s Windmill to return back to Upton Corner.
