Record score for Worksop

SHEFFIELD DIVISION TWO

Worksop 87

Storm 44

WORKSOP enjoyed a comfortable victory in their second outing of the season, netting a record score as they brushed aside their Sheffield-based opposition to go top of the league.

The Bassetlaw side led from start to finish after Mark Boot had set them on their way with an early three-pointer.

Luke Richardson and Steve Lawes were among the points early on as Worksop took control of the game by the first break, leading 22-13.

Martins Evalds came on early in the second to make his debut for the club and he was quickly onto the scoresheet.

Storm briefly threatened a fightback with a 7-0 run midway through the period, but Worksop replied with a 7-1 run of their own to lead 37-21 at the half.

Worksop took the game away from Storm early in the third with Brett Shelton and Boot scoring at will.

Storm had to rely on a couple of threes to keep the score respectable as the quarter closed with Worksop 63-34 to the good.

Another Storm three early in the final period gave them a glimmer of hope, but this was quickly snuffed out by a 17-2 Worksop run, including six of six free-throws from Lawes and eight points from Jamie Clarke.

An Adam Drabble two in the dying seconds concluded the scoring as Worksop surpassed their previous highest score of 84.

A delighted coach Lawes said: “This was a great performance from the guys tonight, which is especially pleasing after the poor performance in the win over Retford.”

“If we can produce this level of play each week, we should be able to give any team in the division a run for their money.”

Worksop: Lawes 20, Richardson 19, Boot 15, Clarke 12, Shelton 11, Evalds 8, Drabble 2.
