Gainsborough All Blacks were pipped 11-8 by league leaders Birstall on Saturday, despite a tremendous performance.

Birstall camped in Gainsborough’s half early on,but the home defence produced tackle after tackle.

Gainsborough’s only opportunities were from break aways, Andy Turner Guest, Will Cawte and Jake Weathers all making breaks to no avail.

Birstal went in front with a well taken penalty, but Gainsborough hit back with a penalty of their own, Man of the match Weathers slotting over.

In the second half Gainsborough Birstall increased their lead with another penalty and when the hosts fell foul of a refereeing decisionthe visitors went over in the corner.

Gainsborough spent the last few minutes of the match in the Birstall 22 and were rewarded with a try by Ryan Woods.

Birstall held out for the win, but it was another good performance by this relatively young side, for whom Rick Marsh and Oscar Rollings came on in the third quarter and played very well.
