Local table tennis club wants to Bliz region, with satellite clubs in Gainsborough, Doncaster and Scunthorpe

A Gainsborough table tennis club is hoping to spread its wings in the coming year, thanks to a funding boost.

Blitz Table Tennis Club, led by head coahc Paul Johnson, have received cash that will help them establish and maintain satellite clubs in the Gainsborough, Doncaster and Scunthorpe areas.

The Blitz coaches will be sharing their experience by coaching children in eight schools as they bid to increase sporting participation in tthe region’s youngsters.

It is hoped that by promoting the game in schools it will act as a springboard to attract more players into the club to take part in local leagues and also represent the club in national tournaments in the future.

Blitz will be running several teams in the Gainsborough League, as well as having teams represent them in junior, senior and veteran’s British League.

Two Blitz players this week represented the club by playing in the Burton Uxbridge 2* competition.

Adam Gittings, 18, played very competitively in a keenly contested junior boys event.

The Doncaster teenager won two out of his three group matches, losing only to number one seed Joe Pilkington, to qualify for the knockout rounds as runner-up in his group.

Gittings then went on to win his last 16 match 3-1 before eventually departing the competition at the quarter-final stage, losing 3-1 to Mathew Evans, the number two seed and eventual competition winner.

His sister Amy, 14, carried her good form ino the event by reaching the semi-finals of the cadet girls competition.

She lost out 3-2 in a thrilling match to event winner Katie Holt.

The youngster Gittings sibling found it harder in the junior girls competition, winning one of three of her group matches, losing to highly rated players in Danielle Kelly and Holt again.

In the plate competition she fared better, playing back to her best to powerfully defeat Georgia Harris and Rebecca Lowman with some big hitting.

Coaching sessions at the club’s home venue, The Gainsborough Academy, take place on Fridays from 6pm to 7.30pm and 7.30pm – 9pm.
