Gainsborough Maori travelled to North Hykeham for a game arranged after Lincoln failed to raise a team.
Despite taking a bare minimum 15 players, Gainsborough gave a very good account of themselves against their local opponents.
The side was a real mixture of youth and veterans with Shane Ellis, Andre Russell, Wayne Sandall and Dave Woodthorpe all lending their experience to bring the Gainsborough youngsters through.
The game from a score line perspective was very much tit for tat in the first half with both sides evenly matched and replying to each other’s score.
Gainsborough’s two tries came courtesy of Ryan Bradford and veteran Wayne Sandall.
At the break, the sides went in with the hosts 12-10 to the good.
And North Hykeham took advantage in the second half and managed to squeeze a win despite the best efforts of the Maori, who competed for everything and never gave up.
The limit on replacements for Gainsborough led to tired legs by the end of the game leaving Hykeham with most of the possession
Gainsborough gave their all and crossed the line through Rick Marsh, who scored twice, and a superb effort from Man of the Match Liam Flower who capped a fine individual display with his touch down.
Gainsborough never lost heart, kept their discipline and defended really well throughout.
Training for both Gainsborough Rugby Club teams has now changed from Tuesday and Thursday evenings to Wednesday nights.
Anyone interested in learning or playing rugby are more than welcome to attend at 6.30pm.
