WELTON’S William Farr School stole the show at the weekend in the National Schools Badminton Championship Finals when they were crowned national champions in the years 10/11 boys category.
The championship, which took place at Center Parcs, Sherwood Forest, saw William Farr, made up of team members Jacob Perez, Kyran Cox, Ben Garnham and Sam Protheroe, overcome competition from Davenant Foundation School, Essex, and Weaverham High School, Cheshire, in the final round to win the championship.
The trophy was awarded to the team by Olympic silver medalist Nathan Robertson and doubles partner Jenny Wallwork who had been at Center Parcs throughout the day watching the action.
Team member Jacob Perez (16) said: “We’ve been practising really hard with our coaches over the last few months and we were determined to do well today, so we’re absolutely delighted to have won. We have had a brilliant day, and to come away as national champions tops it all off.”
“I’m sure everyone back at William Farr will be dead proud of us.”
Lindsay Foster, PE teacher and William Farr’s sports coordinator, said: “I’m very proud of the boys. They’ve put in a tremendous amount of hard work to prepare for this tournament recently and to just reach the finals is a great achievement, but to come away as national champions is a fantastic result. We’re absolutely thrilled to have won and to be bringing the trophy back to Lincoln with us.”
The Center Parcs National Schools Championships is one of the biggest school tournaments in the country. Last year, over 1,600 schools entered and over 22,000 children took part.
