Westwood pipped in Dubai

LEE Westwood came agonisingly close to his first win of 2012 in Dubai yesterday, losing out by a shot to Rafael Cabrera-Bello.

The Worksop golfer, who moves back to number two in the world rankings, was runner-up in the Dubai Desert Classic for the third time.

Westwood led going into the final round, and he got off to a great start with an eagle at the second hole.

A bogey at the fifth, a birdie at the 13th and 15 pars left him with a two-under-par round of 70.

But his inability to pick up another shot cost him, as 27-year-old Spainiard Cabrera-Bello shot a bogey-free round of 68 to take his second tour win.

Second place gave Westwood €164,434 euros in prize money.

Tweeting his thoughts on a poor putting performance, the Worksop Golf Club export said this morning: “Tossed that one away nicely yesterday.”

“Carnage on the greens.”
