Trinity draw with Mariners

GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY 0 GRIMSBY TOWN 0

Brian Little praised his team for an improved performance after they held Grimsby Town on Tuesday evening.

Trinity produced a battling display to keep the Mariners scoreless in their third game in six days on the Northolme.

Speaking to the Standard after the game, Little said: "All in all it's a step up from last weekend (Brigg)."

"They hit the post a couple of times, but we had a couple of chances too. We worked hard and it was a good game."

Grimsby did most of the early pressing with Lee Peacock forcing a good save from Phil Barnes after six minutes and Lee Ridley curling a free-kick just past the post.

Trinity threatened from set-pieces as visiting keeper Nick Colgan looked less than convincing in goal. Lewis McMahon miss-hit a loose ball after Colgan spilled under pressure, while Leon Hibbert had an effort cleared off the line after the ex-Irish international failed to collect a cross.

The Blues came close early in the second half through a Josh Davies' volley, but Town had the best of the chances.

Striker Alan Connell hit the post with Barnes beaten and, just minutes later, Peacock rattled the woodwork as the Mariners looked for a break-through.

Little's men, though, almost snatched the win when substitute Luke Waterfall found himself unmarked ten yards out, but somehow he managed to blast over.
