Tough match for Dolphins

TRENTON Dolphins Swimming Club faced tough opposition when they travelled to Grimsby for the first round of the Lincolnshire Swimming League.

They were up against two teams from the Cleethorpes-Scunthorpe squad (CASA), South Lincs and Grantham but performed very well.

First places were hard to achieve, but there was a total of five and it was encouraging to see that it was the younger age groups that achieved four of them.

Aaron Smith, 12 on the day of the gala, maintained his impressive form as he took full points in both his races, the 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly.

Aaron is now in full training for the county age groups in March.

Henry Cawte, 11, won his 50m breaststroke by three seconds and came third in the 50m freestyle.

William Walmsley, in his first major gala, looked a little apprehensive as he prepared for the 10 years 50m freestyle but, after a fine start, he took maximum points by a good margin.

Robyn Dand, 14, the county record holder for the 50m butterfly, lined up for the open girls 100m butterfly against girls up to four years older than her, but she took an early lead and held in throughout the four lengths.

The 10-year-old girls were in good form with the freestyle relay team of Hollie Watkins, Lydia Waring, Lily Blades and Sophie Hildred a good second.

Later in the gala, Lydia took another second place in her individual backstroke.

Eleven-year-old Georgia McKay produced a personal best time in her 50m freestyle and then gained a third place in the 50m butterfly.

The open boys medley team of William Cawte, David Trickett, Chris Webster and James Smith produced a great effort to take second place against strong opposition.

Third places went to 15-year-old James Smith (freestyle), 14-year-old David Trickett in his 100m breaststroke, 10-year-old Ewan McKay in the 50m butterfly and William Walmsley in the 50m backstroke.

The 12-year-old boys freestyle team of Henry Cawte, Bradley Janney, Aaron Smith and Mitchell O'Connor took five points for second place and then, with Aidan Clover replacing Bradley in the medley team event, gained another five points.

Well done, also, to team members Lawrence Hepton, Matthew Overton, Ben Crookes, Edward Cooke, Jack Boulton, Peter Trickett, Chloe Gilmour, Amy Evans, Lauren Zaitschenko, Megan O'Connor, Megan Stevenson, Lucy Bower and Ruth Hustwick all of whom made valuable contributions to the final team total.
