Title hopes crushed

Gainsborough Standard Bowls League

MELROSE SSC had their championship hopes crushed last week by both Scotter teams.

On Monday Scotter 2 visited and they immediately took command of two rinks, Pat Whittingham, Viv Allison and Derek Doughty going on to win 26-6 and Janet Richardson, Jenny Staples and Peter Taylor winning 29-11.

The home rink of Eric Dobbie, Pat Bainbridge and Alan Revill won 38-6 to grab the aggregate for a 6-4 (82-72) home win bit it was a case of too many points dropped.

On Wednesday Scotter 1 visited Melrose and they were immediately competitive, the usual home advantage not being apparent.

The Scotter rink of Les Savage, Jim Kirman and John Markham were well in command, tipping the aggregate their way, and they eventually won 27-10.

A 6-4 win for Scotter looked likely but they won another rink on the last end to win 8-2 (82-60) and make themselves strong championship favourites.

Beckingham are quietly and efficiently accumulating points to threaten Melrose.

On Monday they won 8-2 (79-62) at Lincoln Co-op and on Wednesday they easily beat disappointing visitors Marshalls Sports 8-2 (100-60) with two rinks winning by 20 shots and a third by 14.

Andy Green, Albert White and D. Law won 25-9 for the Sports to avoid a disaster.

Owston Ferry stay in fourth after a big 8-2 (105-62) win over rivals and visitors Misterton.

The home rink of Ray Buttrick, Gerald Coggan and Derek Watson won 33-6 to ensure that the aggregate was never in doubt.

Previously, Misterton lost 8-2 at Scotter 1 and so they drop to sixth.

Marshalls A visited Rose A and gratefully came away narrow 8-2 (69-65) winners and followed this up with an 8-2 (86-67) home win over Marton GB.

Marshalls A are back in the Kelsey Cup picture but anyone down to Marshalls Sports could qualify.

Marshalls Sports beat visitors Marton GB 8-2 on Monday to distance themselves from Garner Shield qualification, but Lincoln Co-op need to win one of their games in hand to avoid qualification.

Marshalls A comfortably overcame visitors North Wheatley 72-53 in the Hazel Lawrence competition.

For Wheatley Simon Tuddenham beat Trevor Gaines 23-15 but the A team won the pairs, triples and fours.

Hazel Lawrence draw: Scotter 2 v Melrose; Rose A v Marshalls A; Marshalls Sports v Scotter 1; Misterton v Beckingham.

Millennium draw: Lincoln Co-op v Marshalls Sports; Rose A v Scotter 1; Misterton v Marshalls A; Owston Ferry v Melrose.

North Wheatley conceded their Millennium match with Marshalls Sports because of difficulties raising a team. This followed the unfortunate localised downpour at Marshalls in the original match.
