REDLANDS Primary School’s table tennis team are making a habit of picking up championship titles.
The youngsters won the County Championships earlier in the season, and have added the Zonal Championships after a dominant display in Bradford.
Teams from Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Notts battled it out at the competition at Bradford Grammar School at the weekend, and the Worksop kids came out on top.
Two 8-0 thrashings of teams from Rotherham and Sheffield were followed by a 6-2 win over the host school, and a 6-2 victory over another Sheffield outfit.
The results handed Redlands the title, and ensured qualification for the North of England Championships, to be held next month in Grantham.
Teacher and table tennis coach Steve Walker, father of Team GB star Sam, was delighted with his young charges and believes the Worksop League has contributed to their success.
He told the Guardian: “We’ve got a very competitive side and they played exceptionally well at the weekend.”
“They all play in the Worksop League so they’ve had a good grounding in the game, it certainly helps.”
