Marshalls player called up for Hong Kong

A MARSHALLS cricketer is set to swap life in the Bassetlaw Championship for the very highest level of sport.

Spin bowler Nadeem Ahmed, left, has been called up to the Hong Kong squad for an international Twenty-20 tournament in his country of birth, Pakistan.

The tournament will be broadcast live on Sky Sports later this month, and the 22-year-old paid tribute to the Gainsborough club for supporting him.

Ahmed, who joined Marshalls in May, told the Standard he is very happy in Lincolnshire and pledged his future to the club.

"I would like to thank Marshalls for giving me a lot of support. The club members have been very nice and supportive of me."

He added: "We're looking to get promoted and I'm looking forward to the future at Marshalls."

Although born in Pakistan, Ahmed qualifies to play for Hong Kong through his family.

Ironically his first international was against his home country in 2004.

The Marshalls player, who has played in five one-day internationals, says he is enjoying his time in England.

"Its been a good experience for me and its a bit of a challenge here (England) playing in different conditions."

Saturday's game away at Farnsfield proved to be unlucky 13 for Marshalls as they slumped to a 71-run defeat.

Marshalls had won their previous 12 matches and were top of the Bassetlaw Championship, but have slipped to second place and are three points off the lead.

Despite the loss, Ahmed says the club's prominent position is driving his teammates on.

"Everyone is putting 100 per cent in and trying to win the games because we are doing well," said the left-handed bowler.

Ahmed and his teammates will hope to bounce back from last weekend's setback when they host Killamarsh this Saturday.

Although Ahmed has played at a high level in international cricket, he is confident about reaching new heights with Marshalls.

"There quite a lot difference between what we play at international level to what we play at Marshalls."

"But hopefully next year we'll be playing against county players which is a very good standard."
